Lava tubes form as the surface of an active lava flow cools and slowly roofs over. The lava breakouts from Puʻu ʻŌʻō on May 24 formed flows that are growing to both the north and east. Scientists from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory went out into the field last week to investigate and found a skylight in a newly formed lava tube.
